Caring for your dentures

Properly caring for your denture will allow them to serve you well for the longest time possible. Though you may no longer have teeth you should still schedule a yearly exam to check the condition and fit of the Dentures. This will ensure that a reline of your denture is done before a lack of fit begins to cause a loss of bone support. Also at this visit your dentures will be cleaned for you with an ultrasonic cleaner.

Avoid Letting them Dry Out

To maintain the shape of your dentures you will want to keep them moist at all times. If a denture drys out it can cause warping. Also if you put your denture in hot water it can also cause a change in the shape.

Cleaning

It is important to clean your dentures at least once a day. When handling your denture be careful not to drop them as they can break. It would be best to handle them only over a soft towel or a sink full of water just in case you loose your grip. When cleaning a toothbrush works well to clean all of the crevices of your dentures. However it is best to avoid toothpaste as it is abrasive and will cause unnecessary wear on your dentures. Using a light dish soap works well and you can also use a cleanser such as polident 3-minute denture cleanser to help kill odor causing bacteria. The frequency of using a cleanser rather than soap depends on how well you keep your denture clean on a daily basis.
