Care For An Extraction

After having an extraction proper care is important to aid in the healing process. Healing inside the mouth is similar to a wound healing outside the mouth. A blood clot will form and care should be taken to avoid disturbing this clot as an infection could set in. Here is a list things to be aware of:

  1. Do not rinse your mouth on the day of your extraction. Starting the day after your extraction a warm (not hot) salt water rinse can be used for 1 week. This will help minimize the possibility of infection and keep the extraction site free of debris (especially after meals) to aid in healing. You should not swish the salt water as this may disturb the blood clot.
  2. Bleeding. Following extractions some bleeding is to be expected. If persistent bleeding occurs, place Gauze pads over the bleeding area and Bite down firmly for 15-30 min. Remove Gauze and check for bleeding. Repeat if necessary.
  3. Swelling. An Ice-pac or chopped ice wrapped in a towel should be applied to operated area, 30 min on and 30 min off for 4 to 6 hours. This will help decrease the amount of swelling and thus decrease the pain experienced.
  4. Pain. For mild to moderate pain use any non-aspirin pain medication you like. If you take ibuprofen (200mg tablets) you can take 3 tablets 4 times per day. If this is not enough you could also take Tylenol (acetaminophen) in addition to the ibuprofen (do not take more than the recommended daily limits). If the pain is still not manageable please call our office.
  5. Food. Light diet is advisable during the first 24 hours. If possible eat on the opposite side as the extraction. Avoid brushing in the area of the extract for the first few days. Once it is no longer painful you can brush the teeth adjacent to the extraction site.
  6. Bony Edges. Small sharp bone fragments may work up through the gums during healing. These are not roots, if they are annoying return to this office for their simple removal.
  7. Avoid Smoking. Smoking during the healing process will interfere with healing and can cause bacteria to enter the extraction site.
  8. If unusual symptoms occur, call our office at once.
